FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
What is JROTC?
JROTC is an elective program in High School that teaches students useful life skills, such as leadership, communication, teamwork, and more. It is based off military customs and traditions.
-
JROTC is a very unique class unlike any other high school course. Students, who are called cadets, are taught life skills that prepare them for life after High School.
Instead of focusing on an academic subject, cadets gain valuable advice from Instructors who have experience in both the civilian and military world.
Many colleges and careers value JROTC for the leadership and discipline that it teaches students. Additionally, if a cadet chooses to enlist in the military after High School, they are eligible to join as a higher rank than usual due to their experience in JROTC.
-
JROTC offers a diverse range of different activities for cadets to participate in.
There are many different events that are held annually, such as community parades and ceremonies.JROTC has many different teams that cadets can choose to join, such as Academics, Robotics, Color Guard, Physical Fitness, and Drill. Cadets train regularly in these teams and go on to compete against other schools in the regional, state, and sometimes even national levels.
-
Similar to other school courses, JROTC takes up a class period on a student’s schedule.
First and second year cadets are placed together, while third and fourth year cadets are grouped and separated in another class.
There is an optional 7th period that is an addition to standard classes, which replaces the NYCDOE mandatory Physical Education course.
-
Army JROTC wears the same uniforms as the U.S. Army, with some slight alterations. There are 3 major types of uniforms that cadets are issued at no cost to themselves.
The Army Service Uniform (ASU) must be worn on Wednesdays and in perfect condition, which will be inspected as part of their class grade.
Cadets wear their Physical Training (PT) Uniforms on Fridays.
Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) Uniforms are worn during special events, such as JCLC, which is an annual summer camp held after the school year.
Cadets must wear all their uniforms in accordance with Army Regulation 670-1, and they must be returned back to the school without damage before leaving the program.
